“The best laid plans of mice and men go oft awry.”
The quote comes from Scottish poet Robert Burns’ poem, To a Mouse. Burns was both a poet and a farmer, and his quote came to mind as I wrote last week’s Reality Blog post.
The quote wasn’t the inspiration for the article… it was the predicament.
If you’ve read the post, you saw that I outlined three character traits that, when combined, create a success formula for building your copywriting business.
The traits were persistence, patience, and perspiration.
However, those weren’t my original three options.
The first two were and the post seemed to come alive, almost writing itself. I’d even discovered an analogy that fit them perfectly, with an amazing little “character” to illustrate them to boot!

That character was our family dog, Sugar Baby. When it comes to begging for treats or asking for scratches behind the ears, you can’t beat her for persistence and patience.
But my original third trait, well, using Sugar Baby to illustrate it just didn’t fly.
Try as I might, I just could not come up with a workable analogy that made sense. I even elicited outside ideas from Mary, my wife.
What follows is the failed concept and what I did to break through the barrier.
And how my challenge relates to B2B content marketing.
