Honestly, sometimes I feel like building a copywriting business is a three-ring circus. There are many moving parts that pull you in different directions!
You might be like me. I have a business to build and a personal life to keep intact. To top it off… a full-time job demands my time. It feels like I’m juggling so many things… always about to drop a ball if not careful.
It reminds me… I went to the Ringling Brothers Circus as a child. There was so much going on, it was hard to know where to look. Those were exciting times in my childhood. My siblings and I had a blast!
On the way home in the car, you couldn’t shut us up. Part of it was the sugar rush from all the soft drinks and fluffy cotton candy.
But, there was another reason. Each of us watched the circus from a different perspective. And each of us had our own idea of what was the coolest part of the biggest show on earth.
If the circus was in Fort Wayne, the ride home was about 45 minutes long. That was almost enough time for most of the adrenalin to calm down and us to drift off to sleep in the back seat.
But if the circus was local, you’d better watch out.
We would still be climbing the walls when we got home. Sleep didn’t come easy those nights.
The jugglers were one of my favorite acts. How they kept the balls, bowling pins, or whatever they were tossing about amazed me. I even tried it myself.
I got fairly good at it. But, inevitably, everything I juggled wound up on the floor.
As I grew up, other things became virtual juggling acts.
And even though I’m all grown up, that hasn’t changed. After getting married, Mary and I moved to Arkansas to work for her uncle. About a year later, I changed jobs to work for a sign company.
After that, I felt it was time to go out on my own and start a janitorial business. Mary worked at a fried chicken joint while I did my thing, cleaning windows, carpets, and more for local businesses and residential customers.
When it was time to have kids, things changed drastically. My business hit a plateau and I went back to work for an employer. The regular paycheck added some stability for my young, growing family.
Even so, the entrepreneur inside me didn’t die… he just went into hibernation.
That brings us today, and my newfound business venture as a freelance copywriter.
And… the juggling act started up one more time.
