Reality Blog: How a Leaf Blower Helped Set My Copywriting Fees

I love trees… but, I’m not so keen on leaves. Well, not so much the leaves, but raking them up in the fall. We bought our property partly because of the 10 trees that surrounded the house.

The green leaves look beautiful during the spring and summer. And I love watching them change to stunning colors of reds, oranges, and yellows at the beginning of fall.

Then, well, fall really happens, and they inundate the lawn.

I know what you’re thinking. “Steve, what in the world does this have to do with setting copywriting fees?”

Stay with me and I think you’ll get the picture soon enough.

This year, we went to Indiana for Thanksgiving. Both Mary’s and my folks live there. We took our grandkids to see all their great-grandparents in person for the very first time.

Went we got back home, the yard had an even coat of brown.

There were leaves all over the yard. I had a nice leaf blower that served me well for many a year. However, upon firing it up, it roared loudly, belched smoke and fire, and then went belly up.

Doggone it!

So, off to the store I hastened to purchase a new one. They had several there, from battery-powered machines that only stirred the leaves around, up to huge gas motor behemoths that looked like they could suck up the entire neighborhood with one pass.

I didn’t want to spend a huge pile of cash, so I finally settled on a nice electric one that cost about a hundred bucks. More than I really wanted to lay out, but, it would mulch the leaves as it vacuumed them up.

The bag looked kind of small, to be honest. But, it seemed like the best purchase, so it went in the shopping cart.

Turns out, the bag was just right.

It mulched the leaves so finely that they looked more like dirt than foliage when dumped out. A huge mound of tree droppings was quickly transformed into garden soil.

If the bag was any larger, it would be so heavy that it would be hard to carry to the flower beds.

By spending a little money, the job was done quickly and more efficiently… just in time to watch my favorite program on the History Channel.

Here’s how that helps me set and justify my copywriting fees.
