Spoiler alert! I’m going to tell you a joke. A bad joke. You’ve been warned. This article is about building your freelance business. The joke will illustrate a particularly interesting, and sometimes scary way to force business growth when it seems stalled.
I hope it will, anyway!
Now, my freelance copywriting business is not stalled or failing by any means. In fact, I’m having my best year ever.
But, I really want to end the year with a bang!
My goal is to make more money this year than I do at my full-time job. A few weeks ago, I was within striking distance of them being equal.
Oooh… that just sent shivers up my spine!
Not a bad place to be, for sure. And, it would be easy to coast and let it ride. But, after AWAI’s Copywriting Bootcamp a few weeks ago, I’m not going to do that. The Bootcamp theme was Breaking Through — and, that’s exactly what I intend to do.
Oh, almost forgot. The joke, right? Well, here’s the condensed version.
A small motorist in a tiny car cut off a big, burly truck driver on the highway. Ticked off, the trucker forced him off the road. Getting out of his truck, crowbar in hand, he drew a box in the dirt, yanked the driver from his car, and shoved him into it.
“Don’t you dare move until I’m done,” he shouted! Turning his back to the motorist, he totally demolished the tiny auto. When he turned back around, the motorist was laughing his head off.
Confused, the trucker demanded, “What’s wrong with you? I just destroyed your car!”
“Yes,” chuckled the driver. “But… I got out of the box five times!”
Bad joke, I know.
But, the trucker represents our ominous FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt). It draws a box around us, forbidding us to get out. Without action, we stay in the box, allowing FUD to destroy our vehicle to success… our business growth.
Don’t get me wrong… being in the box can still make you money. It can be downright comfortable. But, it stunts your growth potential. To grow further, you need to break through and step beyond your box.
Here’s how I’m stepping out of mine. How I’m breaking through.
